A Star Is Born
Maria Tallchief debuted in the New York City Ballet's production of Firebird on November 27, 1949 in a performance that launched her to worldwide fame. At a time when ballet was still dominated by European and Russian dancers, Tallchief, a member of the Osage Nation, became the first American and the first Native American to hold the title of prima ballerina, the lead dancer in a ballet company.
